T10T: My Fandoms + How I Got In Them

Top 10 Tuesdays are a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.

This is such a long awaited post. 😀

Sherlock

How I got sucked in: A friend of mine kept talking about this show called Sherlock which she watched on Netflix a million times. Long story short she forced me to binge watch the series with her after season 3 came out. I’m now a full-fledged Sherlockian.

#2

Marvel

Only a fan would understand... Being one, I can honestly say:

How I got sucked in: Same friend who watched Sherlock also forced me to watch The Avengers with her. She then made me watch all the Iron Man movies, the Thor movies, and then I watched the Captain America movies on my own.

Gravity Falls

How I got sucked in: Seeing lots of propaganda about this kids’ show 5 years ago made me turn away from it. However I actually ended up watching the first episode after it just aired and got hooked.

Over the Garden Wall

Over the Garden Wall❤ Adelaide Parade: Ohh, we're goin' to the pasture to meet Adelaide and ask 'er If she has a way to send us back where we came from I don't know who she is, Or how she is Or when or why she is, But as for where she is She is where we will go To Adelaide, to Adelaide Come on and join the Adelaide parade Adelaide, to Adelaide We're going to Adelaide's house today:

How I got sucked in: A week or so after Halloween in 2014, Cartoon Network had a short series that released 15 min. episodes for a whole week called Over the Garden Wall. I thought it looked like a cute kids’ show to watch, but then was taken aback by all the hidden dark moments. I was instantly hooked and watched the entire show as it aired. I’m working my way to turn the friend who got me into Marvel and Sherlock into getting into this show. It’s working. 😀

Yuri On Ice!!!

Yuri!!! On Ice - Altyn Otabek , Crispino Michele , Giacometti Kristoff , Katsuki Yuuri , Lee Seung-gil , Leroy Jean-jacques , Minami Kenjirou , Phichit Chulanont , Qi Guanhong , Victor Nikiforov e Yuri Plisetsky .:

How I got sucked in: I heard about this show on Twitter from Rainbow Rowell. (Yes, I really did, she once tweeted about it.) But I wasn’t into anime at the time and brushed it off. However, my friends who do watch anime kept talking about it and convinced me to watch it. Long story short, I love anime now because someone made me watch YOI.

#6

Superman (Older Versions)

How I got sucked in: I grew up with old 90s DVDs of Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman. I would binge watch these every summer and finish all 4 seasons in 2 weeks. (There’s so many episodes, you have to give up sleep.) My father gave me the Christopher Reeve’s movie and I loved watching those. I ended up watching more older rebooted Superman movies, and my favorite movie ended up to be Superman Returns (A bit more modern but meh, it’s Kevin Spacey and Brandon Routh, how could I not?). I don’t like the current Superman movies, especially Batman vs Superman and Man of Steel.

#7

Doctor Who

Tardis - Doctor Who quote. I like how he starts out all smart and then it devoles into nonsense.:

How I got sucked in: I binged watched a DW marathon during Christmas 2 years ago and got hooked. I don’t have any other way of watching these besides the marathon, so I try to watch as many as I can once Christmas rolls around.

#8

The Infernal Devices

How I got sucked in: After reading and watching City of Bones, I picked up this series despite some negative things being said about it. I came to love it immediately, and it is currently my favorite series of all time.

#9

Webtoons (Yes, I consider this a fandom.)

How I got sucked in: I was reading a bunch of comics on Pinterest, not realizing that a few of them belonged to Webtoons. I found this site out by searching Miss Abbott and the Doctor and Google led me to this site. I began to binge read everything on here, but now I read less. I hope to get back into reading more of these comics soon.

#10

RPG Horror

Horror RPG games:

How I got sucked in: What was supposed to be a quiet, flute practice session with a friend turned into a RPG Horror binge on YouTube. I ended up watching more Horror games later, on my own, and found many that I love. I’ve watched 5 on this list, and have 3 that I haven’t finished.

Anything Okegom

How I got sucked in: Through Mogeko Castle (I, in fact, did like this game, but I wouldn’t recommend it) I discovered Ogekom’s multiple games/comics. Sadly, future Let’s Plays of future games are not prohibited due to spoilers, but I hope to one day play the games myself. Also as I mentioned there are comics. They barely update them, but they’re still fun to read now and then.

  1. To that friend who pushed you to watching Sherlock and got you into Marvel, I say keep them. You have the coolest fandoms. OF COURSE THE WEBTOONS COUNT AS A FANDOM! ALWAYS. ❤ Hopefully I could get into The Infernal Devices already. I really want to read about Victorian era shadowhunters. Anyways, yay for all of the fandoms. 🙂

    1. 😂 I certainly will keep them! (She’s getting me into more fandoms, and I’m trying to introduce her to some too.) WebToons will always be a fandom of mine, I love reading all of them! And READ IT!!!! I love anything Victorian era, and Cassie Clare is fantastic at portraying it!!! ALSO THANK YOU SO MUCH! ❤️

  2. That friend who got you into Sherlock and Marvel…she’s a great friend. And I’ve never really watched Yuri on Ice because I don’t really like sports stuff, but I might give this a try (after I’ve finished Monster…only 58 more episodes to go!). And yay, people in the comments are interested in Webtoons…yay!! And I didn’t realize you could find the comics on Pinterest….huh.
And how are you liking American Ghost Jack?

    1. She really is, she’s getting me into so much nowadays. Yuri on Ice has a basic plot, and basic tropes now that I’m looking back, but because it was the first thing I’ve ever watched in the world of anime, I fell in love with it. I still love it, it’s what got me into anime in the first place. 😄 Also 58 episodes, I hope you get to finish them all!!! There are actually quite a few comics that I came across on Pinterest, I like looking at them now and then. And it’s fantastic! I’m halfway through because I had a lot of time to binge read yesterday. 😄

      1. Ooh, what else has she been getting you into? And ah, that makes sense. I’ve just heard a lot about it. And yeah, I did tell you Monster has a ton of episodes…but it’s so binge-worthy! And ah, that’s interesting to know. I may have to try to find some artist’s older stuff there (totally not stalking their old work).
YAY, I am so glad to hear you say that! And dang, halfway through? Specifics on the amazing factors, please.

      2. It’s hard to remember exactly, she tried getting me into Stephen King stuff, but I was too scared(ish) from watching Carrie. 😅 And I’m pretty sure she’ll get me into some new kinds of anime. It’s good to find an anime with a lot of episodes, so many have around 12-24 episodes. Also, if you want to find comics on Pinterest just search up the artist’s name, more searches come from that.
I’m on 34 I think. It’s a little more than half. I read for quite awhile yesterday, I became addicted. (I wish S2 was available.) Surprisingly enough, I predicted the sub-plot between Sebastian and Jack because it reminded me so much of Black Butler. For example when I found out there was a butler named Sebastian in Ch1 (or was it 2?) I thought, “I bet he’s a demon who prays on human souls.” And I was right. 😅

      3. I like Stephen King a lot! He doesn’t write JUST horror. Some recommendations would be Different Seasons (a novella collection) and especially The Green Mile, one of my favorite books of all time. It is good to find an anime with so many episodes…but I can only hope I find the time to finish it. Ooh…you are going to find SUCH a plot twist. I nearly screamed. (I might try to figure out the whole app thing…I read the author’s note, and a commenter said that this was one of the few comics they were willing to sit through a ton of ads for. I’ll do some research). I’ve never seen Black Butler, but I have predicted subplots in stories thanks to other stories. It’s funny.

      4. Ooohh! I just watched Carrie (which is probably why I didn’t do so well with it, I prefer to read), but I really like your recommendations! I’ll look into those! Tell me how it goes with the app and if you can unlock S2, if it works then that’ll make my life complete. 😂 It’s nice to predict some things, but now I’m scared for that plot twist. (If it has anything to do about the two MCs meeting in a mental hospital, I think I already guessed that the Siren was Go-eun, but if it has to do with something else then I will most certainly be surprised.) Also Jack choses people to go in the house who are related to death, I wonder what Cindy did. 🤔

      5. Ah, that makes sense. I haven’t read or watched Carrie yet. Different Seasons has one horror story (the second one), which even I didn’t like, so yeah. But you have to read Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption! (Inspired the movie The Shawshank Redemption) and The Body (inspired the movie Stand By Me). They are two of my favorite things that King has ever done. Yeah, I’ll try to figure out the app sometime. It’ll make my life complete too, lol. 😅 Hehe…oh, you got to that part! That was such a bittersweet plot twist. But there’s another one that’s much less sweet…😉.

      6. Oh! Thank you so much! I’ll look into these!
And I finished the comic! (I know I know, I probably shouldn’t have, but in my defense I got addicted. 😄) (Also this makes me want to be even further in Bastard, I’m not even at any twists yet.) I’m making a spotlight right now too!
I found out how Cindy is linked to death. I did not expect that one bit, that was an amazing twist! And the end took me by surprise a bit. Go-Eun has to choose, and she knows Sebastian is behind her. I really want S2!!! I hope you are able to figure out the app, that way we can both be able to binge. 🙂

      7. Yes! You should! Both are amazing, some of my favorite Stephen King books. And wow, you finished faster than I did….impressive! (Kinda like how I got a friend into Dr. Frost and she finished it faster than I did…and she goes to this really intensive high school…) And yes, yes, read more Bastard! It gets SO twisty and amazing. And yay, a new spotlight? Yes! Can’t wait to see it!
And oh my gosh, the Cindy twist was so good. I never saw it coming. And the end…the end! The feels were so real! I’ll try to figure out the app, but it may have to wait till summer because school (hopefully sooner, but summer at latest). And yes, that way we can both binge and see what happens.

      8. 😄 I’m actually a slow reader, but I breezed through this comic oddly fast. Oh and good job getting another friend into WebToons!!! I recommend a few comics to some friends, I hope they read them. The twists were amazing!!! I needed a moment for them to settle in, and then I was still shocked afterwards. I hope to do these spotlights every week or two weeks. I need some more material and I don’t have have very many. I’ll continue to read Bastard, I think I’m either almost or passed chapter 20 but I can’t remember on the top of my head. I wrote it down though so I could remember. And summer sounds good. However, I don’t know when I can download the app. My devices are a little out of date. I’ll see what I can do though!!

      9. That’s funny! Shows how addicting it is… And I hope your friends read them soon. And yeah, the twists were so good, and truly unpredictable. Ah, that makes sense. I still look forward to them though! Yeah, that’s okay, I’ll try to let you know as soon as I can.

  3. Great list! I haven’t seen Yuri On Ice yet (shame I know) but I love Sherlock, Marvel, and Gravity Falls!

Also, have you seen Smallville? Its a 10 season show about Superman from the late 90’s/early 2000’s. Its more in line with older DC than newer DC – and really explores Clark Kent becoming Superman and his relationship with Lex Luthor. I think you’d like it! Its one of my favorites at least.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. If you decide to ever watch Yuri on Ice, I hope you like it!!
And I’ve heard of Smallville a lot but never got to watch it!! I really want to though! If I can find some old DVDs I’ll certainly watch it!!! Thank you!

    1. I used to not be into marvel so much either, I guess I was just in the mood for a good superhero movie. 😄 I think the majority of the fans like the original reboots or reading the comics of each individual superhero, so they find the movies to be really good. I haven’t seen many earlier movies unrelated to Marvel Studios, so I can’t vouch for that majority of people. However Marvel movies seem to have a bit of everything for their views (i.e. Action, comedy, romance, thriller, etc.) and that’s what draws many people in as well. It’s totally fine if you don’t like them though, there are also a few people I know that aren’t quite taken by Marvel. 🙂

  4. I love Gravity Falls and Over the Garden Wall! Also, I like Yuri on Ice, but I’m not in the fandom.
Some of my favorite fandoms are Hunter X Hunter, Attack on Titan, Naruto, Maximum Ride (the fandom died a while ago, but I’m still a part of it XD ), and Timeless.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’m also in the Timeless fandom! (I saw your review by the way, I loved it!) I still haven’t read Maximum Ride yet, but I heard so many great things about it. (It might be in the more “dormant” stage, it’s not dead yet! 🙂)

      Like

      1. I’m so glad you liked my Timeless review! I don”t even know anyone else who has even seen the series.
I really hope Timeless gets a season 2 soon! If there isn’t one by the time October rolls around, I’m going to be really upset.
Also, Maximum Ride is such a great YA series. The characters are amazing and the action packed scenes are so memorable! I definitely recommend it. 😀

      2. I know a few people who’ve watched a few episodes maybe, or are interested in watching, but not anyone who’s seen the entire season. I really really want a S2 to come out! After everything that ended with Flynn, and what happened with Jiya, I hope a second season is even possible!
Also thanks for recommending it! I’ll definitely look into the series!

  5. Fan of Sherlock! Because of the series, I never ever felt so less confident being alone! These are just some of my fave qoutes:
“Alone is what I have. Alone protects me.”
“Sentiment is a chemical defect found on the losing side”

    Like

    1. Yes! I love Sherlock! Those were great quotes, and I’m glad you really liked them! One of my favorite quotes is said by Moriarty, “It’s not the fall that kills you, it’s never the fall, it’s the landing.” I never realized this until I heard it. I hope a season 5 is possible, but if it isn’t, I’m satisfied with how they wrapped it up in season 4.
