Fierce Fangirl Friday—Devilman: Crybaby (Spoilers)

You do not know how long I’ve been wanting to do this meme. XD The only reason I couldn’t do it was because I posted reviews every Friday. I’ve seen this over on a lot of different blogs, and really wanted to do it because I wanted an outlet to fangirl and rant about things I like. :3

But I’m probably going to seem really crazy in this post. 😅 It’s kinda what happens when I turn full-on fangirl mode. I’m not always like this, but for this post, I’m gonna be part sarcastic human being, and part excited little nugget. XD (Please still love me after this.)

This is a weekly meme hosted by Jackie @ Too Much of a Book Nerd! Please go check out the link for more awesome fangirling moments!

1. the reaction a fangirl has to any mention or sighting of the object of her “affection”. These reactions include shortness of breath, fainting, highpitched noises, shaking, fierce headhaking as if in the midst of a seizure, wet panties, endless blog posts, etc.

2. a gathering of two or more fangirls in which they proceed to waste endless amounts of time ogling, discussing/arguing, stalking, etc. the object of their “affection”

Okay, now I wish to have a nice, spoiler-free chat about this show, but this is a fangirl post (so all the squeals and rants), and there will be spoilers. XD (A lot, just be warned, I will spoil EVERYTHING.)

Also before I get into things, this show is pretty mature. At least 18+. Please read the warnings before watching (unlike me who never does and gets mildly surprised). Know that there’s lots of explicit content and graphic images.

I try to not post any media that I know is not watchable or readable for everyone, so this will probably be the only time I’ll post about anything with this much graphic content. But if the event arises again, I’ll give you warnings beforehand.

(Also fanart belongs to their respected owners, I just couldn’t find all of them.)

Mood Music (Cause we’re getting into this.)

Ah, and the Rants Begin

(Lots of Spoilers Ahead)

How I went into watching this:

So after the two days it came out, I saw some fanart and was really interested in watching it. Then a friend of mine said, “Hey, you know what show you should watch?”

Then I responded, “Devilman: Crybaby?”

Then my friend said, “Heck yeah you should.” So I did. XD

I binged the first 3 episodes, was completely unsure about it because I was kinda thrown off, but I still watched it until episode 5. After that episode I wanted to stop cause I felt really awkward. XD (I didn’t like episode 5, I’m sorry, it was too weird and my brain didn’t draw many conclusions about it. Only the obvious link was for episode 1 and 10 where Ryo talked about if devils could love.)

But then I just went on my Discord, thinking I should avoid continuing it when the chats started to explode about it. XD So I ended up binge watching the entire season that night and chatted about it away online.

(I just stayed up until 1AM on a Wednesday or Thursday watching/ranting about it. So thank you to those who stayed up with me, it was an experience. XD)

So that’s how I watched it.

Cry Factor:

Okay, so many people have discussed how they were emotional at episode 9 or 10, but for me I only cried during episode 4. XD Episode 4 was a pretty sad episode, I mean, you have Akira’s mom dying, and Akira is just very upset about about it. And in episode 9 and 10, you get the most death out of that series, but oddly episode 4 just struck me harder.

I’m not as positive why. I really liked Miki (Makimura), and how she died was just really depressing, but I wasn’t upset to the point where I was able to cry. Oh, and same goes for her parents. Those where really impactful events, yet I wasn’t as upset as I predicted I would’ve been. (I was still really shocked, but I just didn’t cry.)

First, you turn my little nugget into a devil just for your own purposes… *pauses* … well it was subconsciously so I guess I can’t blame you for that. And I don’t mind Akira being transformed, and he doesn’t really either I guess. (Gotta keep that plot going.) And I guess Ryo did it to protect him in a way… But still, Akira was so pure. Just look at him.

BUT YOU STILL—AAAAHHH. You sold him out ON NATIONAL TV! That’s what I’m most upset about! Then you killed him. WHO DOES THAT? You promise you’d keep his new devil abilities a secret   B  U  T    Y  O  U    D  I  D  N  ‘  T. How? Why! No!

AAAArg. I wanna punch his face, then hug him, then slap him. XD

I’m just putting it out there, I’m just really upset with Ryo. And I said that I didn’t like him once to the same friend who made me watch the show, and she said, “WHY NOT?!

Ryo is just like:

Ryo: *Kills everyone and the world*

Ryo: I’m lonely. T_T

Yet I’m fine the older Ryo. I’ve been wanting to watch the 80s movies (is it the 80s one?) where Ryo is just pure salt in the dub and it’s fantastic. XD (There’s so many compilations about the dub, and now I just want to watch it, more than the sub.)

So yeah, I am not a huge fan of Ryo, I’m still very mad at him. 😅 Though I still like to draw him, cause he be the aesthetic I’ve been looking for. XD

Just, Akira deserves to be happy. And Ryo is making that impossible. AHHHHH!

But yeah, a lot of people do still like Ryo. And that’s fine. Like I mentioned, my friend likes him after everything, and I know a lot of other people who seen the show and couldn’t hate him. And I’m fine with anyone liking him, it’s just I find it hard to. 😅 And I still join in conversations about Ryo, so it’s not like I’ll bluntly say that he’s the absolute worst, drop the microphone then leave. XD

(I do appreciate all the memes for the new Ryo though, that’s what I call high quality content.)

Okay, so the popular ships are Miki Makimura x Miki Kuroda and Ryo x Akira.

I was on both of those trains, but after episode 10, I was just really mad at Ryo to the point where I thought Akira deserved better. XD (Yet my anger at Ryo made me love the show more. *shrug*)

The reason I don’t ship Miki x Akira is becasue I see them more as a family. They point it out a lot, and if I remember right, Akira did make a move but Miki kinda laughed it off in the end/thought he was joking around. But the end credit scene of episode 9 made me rethink their ship again, but it didn’t stay for long anyway because… well she’s dead now.

And I am mixed about the Ryo x Akira ship because, well, RYO RUINED IT. Ryo did realize he cared, but THAT WAS AFTER HE DESTROYED THE WORLD AND KILLED EVERYONE. I have been told various times to give him slack though. But I can’t, I’m sorry. 😅 Not in Crybaby at least. We’ll see how he is in the older versions.

And there was one moment where I thought the dreads rapper guy (the one that turned into a devilman too) and Miki K were cute together, but that changed entirely when they both transformed. (It’s not that I just thought they looked good together, but there seemed to be a promising friendship growing between them that was utterly squashed.)

This Soundtrack is Everything:

I haven’t actually listened to much of the soundtrack until now, while I’m writing up this post. XD But listening to it now, I keep noticing a theme with some of the Netflix Original show soundtracks. A lot of them are cyberpunk-esque, which I do like to listen to. And there’s different variations of it per show, so I always find soundtracks like Devilman different from the others but similar in genre.

Best Boi: Akira

Best Gurl: Miki Makimura

Best Cat: Tako

Final THinGs: (Things I caught things I confirmed things I found out)

  • Why does Ryo have so many wings? Well, I guessed it was because before he was banished to Earth, he was in a high category of angels. I later confirmed this. (Those wings terrible to draw, there’s too many. XD)
  • Two Moons? I guessed that there was a new Earth, and the old Earth was destroyed so much that it just became another moon which encircled the new Earth. I found out I need to re-watch episode 1 to understand why. I read a post about it and got my theory confirmed. (Yeah, I was right.) But also the first moon was due to another war. (I had to look that one up.) (Read this post, it played with my heart, I now want to draw Earth Akira and Moon Ryo. XD)
  • Did you catch Ryo’s apartment number? I noticed it the first time I watched it. And since I spoiled the fact that he was Satan, when I saw that his apartment number was 666, the only thought on my brain to the directors was Ayyyyyyy! XD I just enjoyed the fact that they subtly hinted that, lol.
  • Why are they’re so many Devilmen/women? If you look back at the older Devilman movie (is it the movie? I thought there was a show too?) Akira and Ryo have this discussion about pure people overcoming the possession, which turns them into a devilman. Akira was the only devilman, but when the realization hit that there are others, it means they probably had that shred of goodness like Akira. They can keep their new body and abilities, but still think like a human.

A Last Word on the Controversy

This isn’t a show for everyone. I made that clear in the warnings above. Even though I liked it, despite the plot/story/character/pacing flaws I found (if I did a serious post, I would’ve discussed those), not everyone finds it to be their cup of tea. (Even I was really uncomfortable with the explicit scenes [by that I’m not talking about the gore], and felt very awkward.)

And that’s okay. The point of Fangirl Friday is to fangirl about the things you like. There are people who like Ryo, and there are those who don’t. There are people who think the show is amazing, and there are people in the middle. Just because someone likes or dislikes something, doesn’t mean the opinions of another person are the same.

But I do like Devilman: Crybaby, and I know IRL people and online people who think the same or otherwise. Still, I don’t think I’ll change my opinion anytime soon, and I won’t encourage others to do so either. You are all free to think and like whatever you want!

And I just used that freedom to fangirl/rant about Devilman. XD

Also I need to mention that this is a V E R Y explicit and disturbing show. Yes, I liked it. Yes, I also didn’t like it for my own reasons. XD There is no censorship, nothing, nada. You’re going to hate things and you’re going to like things. It’s the way it goes.

But if you are in the age range, or have the mental capacity to not care about the content (unlike me, I made a mistake XD) then… I can’t say anything other then you have been warned?

Okay I’m fine now, I needed to get this out of my mind, and into the world. 😅 So that was me at full-fangirl mode, it’s not a pretty sight, lol. Hopefully you still enjoyed this mesh of odd fangirling. XD If not, that’s fine, I’m not even at my craziest in this post, I’m usually more intense, but I understand, haha. (I even finished the entire soundtrack while writing this.)

That’s all for now, bye!

  1. I’m one of the people who doesn’t like Ryo at the end of Devilman: Crybaby. I felt sad but I didn’t cry at all. I thought Akira and Miki were more like friends in my opinion. I enjoyed the raps in between. I thought how Akira and everyone else in the show ran peculiar and I wish there was an alternative ending.

    1. YES SAME! XD I didn’t like Ryo in the end of Crybaby, but I kept watching a bunch of clips about the older versions of Devilman and decided that I liked the older version a little better. : P And I agree with Akira and Miki, they were more like a family that looked out for each other, not quite a couple. And I loved how they ran. XD The ending is the same in the manga, but yes, I would’ve liked it if the creators of Devilman Crybaby had a little for freedom with how they chose to end the series. (They’re also similar to the older versions from what I’ve seen, but there’s still a lot of change between them and the newer version.)
